The concurrent garbage collector is a low-pause garbage collector that generally provides better performance than the train garbage collector. The -Xincgc option now invokes the concurrent garbage collector instead of the train garbage collector. The following notes pertain to the Java HotSpot virtual machines (VMs) in this release. See also the Troubleshooting section of the Linux Installation Notes. If you have uninstalled all versions of the Java RPM from 1.4.2 and higher, it is safe to remove these files. These files are used to associate the Java JAR and JNLP file extensions with the current JRE. Some files may not be deleted after removing all Java RPM versions from 1.4.2 and higher.(Note: this problem does not effect how the JRE works from the command prompt.) See bug report 5063669. If you are already experiencing this problem you will need to uninstall all versions of the Java 5.0 RPM, and then re-install the newest version.

To avoid this problem, uninstall old non-FCS versions of 5.0 before installing newer versions.

The workaround is to install a TrueType JIS X 0201 font into the J2RE's lib/fonts/fallback directory. Because several Red Hat Linux versions do not have a TrueType font for JIS X 0201 by default, the font configuration files for these versions do not include any definition for JIS X 0201.This problem is being tracked in bug report 4701394. An apparent bug in the Linux 2.4.9 kernel can sometimes cause an application running on the Java platform to occupy essentially all CPU resources, causing the application to hang. The Linux 2.4 SMP kernel sometimes issues duplicate PIDs, which can lead to anything from network errors to crashes. This problem can affect Linux platforms such as Red Hat 7.0, 7.1, and 7.2 that have glibc versions 2.2 to 2.2.4. A glibc 2.2 bug in versions 2.2.4 and earlier can cause the virtual machine to hang on exit when there is only one remaining active thread. No workaround exists for these problems the Linux system must be upgraded to eliminate them. The following problems can occur intermittently on multi-processor systems. You can obtain an updated kernel for Red Hat Advanced Server from either HP or Red Hat. Please verify that you have the 2.4.20 kernel or a later one installed by using the 'uname -a' command. Java applications running on these kernels, especially on multi-processor machines, will likely experience random segment faults and in general will be unreliable. These early kernels are the standard kernels that come with Red Hat for Itanium. Linux kernels for Itanium prior to 2.4.20 have serious virtual memory bugs. The following notes apply to use of this release on Linux platforms. To determine the version number of your J2SE software, use the following command: java -versionįor platform-dependent issues and bugs in particular J2SE technologies, search this page for the platform name ("Windows", "Linux", or "Solaris TM ").
